What to look for on the radar

The radar is not a forecast: it shows the rain that is already falling, measured by weather radars over the last few minutes. That makes it most useful for the hour ahead — seeing where a band of precipitation comes from and where it is heading — while the table on this page, computed from the hourly model, covers the next twelve hours.

Green and blue patches usually mean light or moderate rain. Yellow, orange and red usually mark heavy rain or a storm.

A compact patch moving fast usually passes in twenty or thirty minutes; a wide, even area can rain for hours. Always look at where the animation is heading: what matters is not where the rain is now, but where it will be in half an hour. The layer refreshes roughly every ten minutes and can arrive a few minutes late.
